Writing Copy For Ads - A How-To Guide

/ On : 9/12/2011 11:36:00 PM/ BLOG
My mentor in business once said, "If you're copy writing is on point, the selling part will take care of itself." I truly realized at that point I had it backwards and was spinning my wheels trying to master list building and site promotion. I always thought selling was at the top of the list when it came to copy writing or writing any type of ad copy. I was wrong. It always seems to come down to doing the same thing over and over and not getting the results you want. You then realize there is another way to get to your goal but requires you to try some thing different. The some thing different almost always has the answer or will produce better results. However, we are creatures of habit and like things not to change.
Writing copy is the single most important skill needed for any marketing campaign. A few things I have learned over the last few weeks have made all the difference. To illustrate my point I recently placed an ad on Craigslist.com to sell some furniture. The response was much better than expected. The first customer to purchase some of our furniture told me they liked my ad title. She went on to say the ad copy got her attention, made her laugh and she then decided to buy from me. Pretty cool! What I realized at that moment I needed to study and practice my ad copy. I can say for the first time I am excited to write ad copy and can't wait to see the results. Tell this to my 4th grade English teacher and she would tell you to lay off the sauce.
I learn most of my ad copy skills by plugging into webinars that include six, seven and even eight figure earners in the online marketing industry. The key is to learn from those who have done it, are doing it and have the knowledge and proof to back it up. I study my business mentor who is a master at ad copy and is currently a seven-figure earner in the industry. Three years of practice and refining have provided a lifestyle free from money woes. That is who you should learn from. Choose your "learning materials" carefully. So let us spend a few moments touching on some strategies I have been taught that are changing my business as I write this for you, the reader. By the way, thanks for taking the time to read this and my prayer is it helps you to get you to where you want to go.
We must focus on getting people to what is referred to as "purchase readiness." This is not selling them on anything but rather using a formula I have been taught to use which yields results, "Problem-Agitation-Solution". Simply put, cut em' open-add alcohol-show em' the band-aid. Here is a good example. Let's use this article. If you are the reader the problem might be not knowing how or not getting the results you want from your ad copy. The agitation is frustration in your business which is creating wasted time and resources. The solutions are the ideas presented through out you can use immediately to improve you writing of your personal ad copy.
Please don't forget the main point of any ad copy is to bring the potential customer to your "call to action". The call to action is what do you want them to do? Remember, we are providing value so please make sure your call to action has a benefit for them. This brings us to letting them know what to expect during the call to action process. This is referred to as "Conditioning" which is the price they can expect to pay, that effort will be required to be successful in your offer and lastly what exactly they can expect during the entire action of proceeding through your marketing funnel.
Let's end with a few thoughts I have been taught and use in my personal online marketing business. First, implementation provides improvement over time. This is the practice, that I myself am doing now, that will make you better every time you do it. Know your prospect better than you know your product. Spend time identifying what your ideal prospect or Avatar is. If you don't know this simple but powerful information you might be aiming at one thing and hitting another. This never produces positive results and leads to frustration! You know what comes after frustration, the business killer, inaction. We can sum up this section by saying he or she who does the thing has the power.
In conclusion, please make sure you are having fun with writing ad copy! This will only happen when you practice writing to your ideal audience or Avatar. I will be the first to admit my goal after getting out of school was to never read or write anything ever again. It appears I had the wrong teacher or perhaps needed a better mentor.
